The Most Anticipated DVD Box Sets of 2014

Brooklyn Nine-NineIt is a relatively recent phenomenon to see DVD box sets becoming a hot topic. Sure there were a few in the past that hit it big, Friends to name a popular one. However, there has certainly been a growing interest in box sets over the years. The arena is not limited to the retail sector, there is booming trade on the resale market too. Everyone seems to be picking up DVD box sets through online classifieds, at car boot sales, on forums, and through auction websites. The same box sets are sometimes sold several times, as the owner will watch through the set and resell it to recoup their investment.

In the end, this makes for practically free viewing of hours upon hours of content. It’s a great approach, but it’s not possible when a DVD box set is brand new. In this case, the only real option is to buy it new unless you are willing to wait it out – if it’s a show with popularity that is fuelled by speculation and hype (interested viewers, not hardcore fans) then you may not have to wait too long.

Let’s get down to the nitty gritty of the most anticipated DVD box sets for this year. These are TV shows that people absolutely love and cannot wait to watch on DVD. Sure, some of them may be newer shows but they are still likely not going to be resold very quickly once bought.

With all that said, here’s a look at some of the most anticipated DVD box sets of 2014.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

This is one of those new shows that seemed like it would go nowhere fast, but it ended up taking off even quicker. Before even finishing the first season, the show was signed for another season and was announced as being the only surviving comedy show from FOX. With the star-power of Terry Crews, the upcoming host for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and a very workable cast, this show is the fuel for many hours of laughs. It’s NOT your average cop show.

While the official release date has not been announced, it is expected that the Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 1 box set will release by the third quarter of this year.

Orange Is The New Black

Here’s an interesting take on prison comedy – it stars Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, a woman in her 30’s that was sent to prison for 15 months for a crime committed a decade ago. The crime? Smuggling drugs for her drug-slinging girlfriend. You can guess the nature of this show right from the premise; it’s become a huge hit as one of Netflix’s exclusive shows.

The Season 1 box set for Orange Is The New Black is marked for release on May 13th, 2014.

Happy Days

Surprisingly, Happy Days spent 10 years on air yet has only seen four of them featured in DVD box sets in its 30 years since going off air. Happy Days fans are beyond eager for all the seasons to make it out onto DVD. Slowly but surely it will happen, but for now all they have to rely on is the Season 5 DVD box set, which is set to release very soon.

The Happy Days Season 5 box set is scheduled for release on May 20th, 2014.

Breaking Bad

Fans of Breaking Bad are highly anticipating the release of the DVD box set that will contain all 62 episodes of the show – uncut and uncensored! This one really speaks for itself and even though you can go and buy each season individually, this is an ultimate keepsake for Breaking Bad fanatics.

The complete DVD box set for Breaking Bad is set to release on June 3rd, 2014.

Ray Donovan

Here’s one that is definitely going to pick up a lot of interest once it releases. Ray Donovan is the Sopranos of the 2010’s for HBO. That’s a fully deserved claim too, with a star-packed cast and the most impressive performance from Liev Schreiber to date, this show has been beautifully produced. With fans clinging on for the second season to begin, and many having not been able to access the first season on TV, the DVD box set is definitely a hot item.

The First Season DVD box set for Ray Donovan will be out in stores on June 10th, 2014.

True Detective

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson prove that they can perform at award-winning levels in the cinematic masterpiece that is ‘True Detective’. This show focuses around two detectives on the hunt for a Louisiana serial killer, for 17 gruelling years. It’s another hot show from HBO and seeing as it just finished its first season, the fun is just getting started.

True Detect Season 1 is expected to release in a DVD box set on June 10th, 2014.
